Money Mission: Make A Realistic Retirement Plan

May 12th, 2012

I vividly remember dealing with a client many years ago at the financial institution where I worked. He was in his late-50s and wanted to put aside some funds for his retirement. Preparing to discuss investment options and strategies for this objective, I asked him how much money he had to start his plan.

He presented me with a cheque for just over $150,000, and after I asked some pertinent questions, it became clear that this was the sum total of my clients net worth. He explained that he had worked in the music industry for his entire life and had seen a lot of money pass through his hands, but had never thought about putting aside some of his earnings for the future.

1. Whats better: Paying off a high-interest debt or a debt with the smallest balance?

In the long-term, youll pay less by paying off your highest-interest rate cards first. Planning for life

Given how busy our lives seem to be these days, its no wonder that many of us feel stressed and chronically anxious about money and even more chronically short of time to do anything about it. We question how to make time to write a detailed budget, to read up on stock tips, or to figure out a retirement strategy, when all we really need to do by tomorrow is pay our utility bill and buy gas for the car. But the truth is that people need to develop a plan for their money that will enable them to live the life they want for themselves and for their families. This is the first step in getting your financial life in order.

Planning your financial future is an ongoing process, not a one-time...

Horsepower race driven by egotism

May 9th, 2012

I just read an article describing the current horsepower races European (mostly) auto manufacturers are indulging in. I say mostly because it is primarily a European race – the North American manufacturers are a little busy rebuilding these days. So, with the exception of a handful of muscle cars such as the 500-and 600-horsepow-er-plus Mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes and the next-generation Vipers, the domes-tic Big Three are pretty much staying out of it.

The trend by the Europe-an companies is to develop smaller and smaller engines that put out more and more horsepower. So, while horse-power is increasing, the engines displacements are decreasing – as are the number of cylinders...
